Avenues of Translation

Resumen del Libro

Libro Avenues of Translation

Winner of the 2020 SAMLA Studies Book Award — Edited Collection Cities both near and far communicate in a variety of ways. Travel between, through, and among urban centers initiates contact, and cities themselves are sites of ever-changing cultural and historical encounters. Predictable and surprising challenges and opportunities arise when city borders are crossed, voices meet, and artistic traditions find their counterparts. Using the Latin word for “translation,” translatio, or “to carry across,” as a point of departure, Avenues of Translation explores how translation perpetuates, diversifies, deepens, and expands the literary production of cities in their greater cultural context, and how translation shapes an understanding of and access to a city's past and present literary and cultural practices. Thinking about translation and the city is a way to tell the backstories of the cities, texts, and authors that are united by acts of translation. Published by Bucknell University Press. Distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press.

Y los arquitectos, casi todos, en una alianza constante y sumisa con los dueños del capital, siempre están más atareados en buscar un beneficio económico para unos pocos y olvidan un compromiso social para muchos. La vivienda social, como la vivienda en general, podría repensarse desde unas cuantas condiciones que, por supuesto, no interesan lo más mínimo a los que opinan que el inmovilismo, ...

Tres visitantes en París

Libro Tres visitantes en París

The author describes and discusses the influence Le Corbusier in Uruguay through a series of trips, the first done by the Swiss-French architect in 1929, and the remaining ones from the three Uruguayan architects who joined the workshop of the notable architect: Carlos Gómez Gavazzo, in 1933, Justino Serralta, in 1948, and Carlos Clémot, in 1949. The study also includes aspects of Antonio Bonet Castellana's trip, who was there in 1937 and in Uruguay from 1945 to 1948, and additionally analyzes what Eladio Dieste learned from his "Le Courvoisier partners" Serralta and Clémot as well as the...

Libro A bordo del patio de vecindad

The book is an historic and graphical account of the patios of "vecindad" (neighbourhood) in the port city of Veracruz, in a period that goes from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 21st century. The foreword of this edition, states that the first record of a patio of a "vecindad" dates back to 1791, highlighting that those patios have seen the early years of musician and singer "Toña la Negra" and were the place of origin of the famous "picadas" from Veracruz, one of the most popular snacks of the jarocha traditional cuisine.
