En esta obra se compilan 13 trabajos que tratan distintos aspectos acerca de la importancia de las conchas marinas rojizas en la América antigua, las cuales fueron muy apreciadas por las culturas que poblaron el continente antes de la llegada de los invasores europeos; en la región Andina se les llamó mullu, y tapachtli entre los antiguos nahuas, designaciones que abarcaron varias especies de moluscos, pero sin duda las más relevantes fueron las del género Spondylus.
