The volume is divided into chapters addressing Menendez as an explorer and family man, his preparation for the conquest of Florida, the conquest itself, early Spanish travels as far as Newfoundland, Spanish-Native American contact in Florida, the Spanish settlement of Florida, and the consequences of Menendez' untimely death. The volume contains synthetic articles as well as original letters and testimonies, and also includes a bibliography of primary sources on the early Spanish period in the southeast.
