La investigación parte de una síntesis sobre la formación del pasionario y el santoral hispano altomedieval para analizar las transformaciones operadas, mediando razones ideológicas, en el culto a los santos en el curso del siglo XI. Los medios monástico, episcopal y catedralicio son luego examinados en su faceta de centros de producción hagiológica con fines propios. El trabajo se completa con un análisis del trabajo hagiográfico de dominicos y franciscanos, incluida su relación dialéctica e ideológica con el poder monárquico.
