El Montecillo de perfección es el trasunto gráfico de la Subida del Monte Carmelo. Ambas a su vez traducen los versos «En una noche oscura», sobre el camino ascético de la purificación del alma para su unión con Dios. Experiencia hecha poema, poema traducido a imagen y a prosa. En ella, san Juan de la Cruz intercala excerpta bíblicos en latín; los vierte al castellano y los amplía con glosas aclaradoras. Su libertad estilística al traducir la Biblia crece a lo largo de la obra hasta rendirse únicamente al castellano.
