Este trabajo intenta recuperar la figura del canónigo Roque Chabás como el iniciador de la historiografía valenciana moderna y pone de manifiesto su aprecio por la Universidad de Valencia al engrosar con su legado los fondos de la biblioteca universitaria. Con él se inició un movimiento historiográfico de carácter científico sobre temas valencianos sustentados en estudios documentales y arqueológicos, una dedicación personal que plasmó en la ordenación de varios archivos.
