Naive art became recognized as such at the end of the 19th century. Created by artists who often lacked formal education, and characterized by a simplicity and spontaneity far removed from formal, institutionally approved styles, naive art is more popular today than ever. This oversize book honors a wide range of important artists of this distinctive form from many countries and time periods, including Henri Rosseau, Seraphine de Senlis, Andre Bauchant, Camille Bombois, Joan Miro, Guido Vedovato, Niko Pirosmani, and Ivan Generalic.
