Francisco de Rojas Zorrilla y Augustín Moreto

Resumen del Libro

Libro Francisco de Rojas Zorrilla y Augustín Moreto

An elucidation in Spanish of the dramatic intentions and accomplishments of the two best imitators of the inspired craftsmanship of Pedro Calderón de la Barca, this is the first monograph to be published on Rojas Zorilla and Moreto for at least two decades. Following an introductory section, in which she discusses and compares the differing attitudes and methods of the two dramatists, the author concentrates on their respective achievements in the genres which they practiced with enthusiasm and ability. Among the comedies and serious secular plays selected for analysis are not only their most celebrated works, but also numerous plays previously overlooked or undervalued. These lesser-known works are revealed to be worthy of scholarly attention and are also discovered to illuminate hitherto rarely perceived or appreciated aspects of their creators' dramatic art. Moreto is shown to have, besides his famous aptitude for comedy, considerable abilities for treating serious or tragic themes, conflicts and characters. In addition to his celebrated preference and capacity for dramatizing sensationalist subjects and for creating abnormal, even pathological protagonists, Rojas Zorilla is observed to have other less obvious talents – for exploiting without fuss the best resources and techniques of drama and the stage; and for creating with imaginative restraint characters that are convincingly normal and humanly limited in the directions of their thoughts, the ranges of their emotions and the extremes of their conduct.

Pese a...

Libro Los Géneros Poéticos Del Siglo de Oro

This collection of seventeen essays on Spanish Golden Age and Spanish American Colonial Poetry unites contributions from a cross-section of specialists in the field of Hispanic poetry. It places aesthetic questions in their broader European context, and looks beyond the confines of Europe to interrogate the key terms of its title, balancing panoramic approaches to questions of genre with the insights afforded by detailed readings of individual texts.

La Parodia en la nueva novela hispanoamericana (1960–1985)

Libro La Parodia en la nueva novela hispanoamericana (1960–1985)

In this brilliant overview of parodic praxis in the Spanish-American novel during the years 1960-1985, Elzbieta Skłodowska examines several aspects of parody: its role in the renovation of anachronistic forms of discourse (mock-epic) and the re-writing of the canon of the historical novel; its function in transgressing literary formulas (detective novel); its subversive quality in the counter-discourse of women writers; and the relation between parody, satire, irony, humor, and metafiction. This sound analysis of some twenty-five novels, carefully illustrated by works little treated in...

Propuestas par (re)construir una nación

Libro Propuestas par (re)construir una nación

Propuestas para (re)construir una nación explores how Emilia Pardo Bazán (1851–1921) imagines and engenders the Spanish nation in her theatrical production staged and/or published between 1898 and 1909. In the aftermath of Spain’s colonial losses, when Spain’s male authors, in a growing mood of collective introspection, directed their attention to the homeland, Pardo Bazán generated a series of theatrical proposals to revitalize the nation. In her plays, she manifests her ideas about Spain’s fin de siècle crisis, reflects on Spain’s place in the international arena (emphasizing...
