José Español nació en Zaragoza en 1694. Posiblemente estudió en alguno de los centros musicales de Zaragoza, como El Pilar o La Seo. Sus maestros pudieron ser Miguel Ambiela, Joaquín Martínez de la Roca, José de Cáseda o Francisco Portería. Entre 1715 y 1718 fue organista en el Real Monasterio de San Juan de la Peña (Huesca). En 1731 fue nombrado organista de la parroquia de Santo Tomás de Haro (La Rioja), cargo que ocupó hasta su muerte, ocurrida en 1758. En Haro dirigió la pequeña capilla de música que tenía a su disposición, aunque hay constancia de que también participó en las fiestas de localidades vecinas, como Casalarreina (La Rioja) o Laguardia (Álava). En Haro se ha conservado parte de sus papeles de música. Son unas 120 obras (villancicos y cantadas) compuestas en las primeras décadas del siglo XVIII, de las que 43 obras son de José Español. Solo otras dos obras de este músico se han conservado en otros archivos.
