Summer is over and that can only mean one thing for eight-year-old Mallory McDonald (like the restaurant, but no relation)--she has to go back to school. This novel, narrated in two voices for their characters, playing strong themes that make up the life of a boy and a girl living in Havana, Cuba. Discrimination, sexism, harassment, female subjugation, homosexuality, are treated with subtlety through metaphors, pauses, silences and innuendos that make this a moving and thoughtful book.

When she is falsely accused of stealing Queen Clarion's crown, Vidia begins an investigation that leads her on a wild goose chase to the far corners of the Home Tree.
