Dedicó a partir de la juventud buena parte de su vida al periodismo, primero en Guadalajara y luego en la ciudad de México, y desempeñó altos cargos diplomáticos durante el gobierno de Porfirio Díaz, en el que ejerció como Subsecretario de Relaciones Exteriores y, más adelante, como ministro plenipotenciario en Guatemala.
