The book is an historic and graphical account of the patios of "vecindad" (neighbourhood) in the port city of Veracruz, in a period that goes from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 21st century. The foreword of this edition, states that the first record of a patio of a "vecindad" dates back to 1791, highlighting that those patios have seen the early years of musician and singer "Toña la Negra" and were the place of origin of the famous "picadas" from Veracruz, one of the most popular snacks of the jarocha traditional cuisine.

The present edition publishes part of the research papers presented during the "Seminario de Investigación Arquitectura para la Producción" organized by the university of Michoacán between 2001 and 2002 that included the participation of national and international academics. The book gathers 23 collective and individual multidisciplinary works that examine from various perspectives the history of architecture in rural areas.
